: Curiosity did not kill the iguana
: Hanover reptile returned to owner after weekend flight.

: Evening Sun Reporter
: A customer once stepped up to the counter at Newcomb's Market in Hanover and tipped his cap to the cashier. The gesture revealed a coiled snake resting on the man's head.
: Another customer once brought a four-foot alligator to the store. Since the reptile's mouth was taped shut, market employees accepted an invitation to rub the gator's belly.
: Yet another customer once came to the store with a tiny monkey perched on his shoulder.
: So it wasn't too much of a shock when a man brought an iguana to the store Monday morning, saying he found it and asking if anyone wanted to adopt it.
: The iguana, appropriately named Curious, escaped its cage and the home in which it's kept Thursday night and spent the better part of two days roaming downtown Hanover. Curious was captured Saturday morning, spent the rest of the weekend in a makeshift cage and was brought to Newcomb's Market at 387 High St. in a plastic trash can Monday morning.
: Market employee Schreall Baumgardt adopted the animal, but only temporarily. Baumgardt, who once owned an iguana named Little Dude, said she would have kept Curious if her boyfriend wouldn't have opposed the idea.
: "I like dogs and goldfish, but I don't like snakes and lizards," said Richard Newcomb, Baumgardt's boyfriend who also works at the market.
: And when Baumgardt, cuddling the iguana, came to Newcomb's bedside and woke him Monday morning, he pretty much told her the same thing.
: So Baumgardt set out to find the iguana's owner. Thinking the iguana might have been a child's pet, Baumgardt marched down High Street and rang doorbells wherever she saw toys lying on a front porch.
: Sure enough, the strategy worked. After spending an extended weekend living up to his name, Curious was reunited with owner Genevieve Green.
: "I was so happy she had been found," Green said of the female green tree iguana.
: Green said Curious has its own sunroom on the second floor of Green's High Street home. And Curious probably crawled or jumped from the second story Thursday night, Green said. The sunroom door was closed, but a window was left open.
: A neighbor of Green's reportedly saw the iguana in a nearby tree after it escaped.
: Saturday, Russ Weaver saw it. Weaver, who owns Weaver Brothers Discount Home Improvements, 100 E. Chestnut St., Hanover, was driving to work Saturday morning when Curious ran across the road in front of him.
: "He was really moving," Weaver said of the speeding iguana.
: When Weaver got to the store, he immediately called Craig Robinson, an employee at Weaver Brothers.
: "(Weaver) knows I'd do just about anything," Robinson said. "He didn't want (the iguana) to get hurt, but he didn't want to touch it, either."
: So Weaver, who said he doesn't like iguanas, recruited Robinson to help capture Curious. The men, patrolling in Weaver's truck, spotted the iguana atop a chain-link fence. Robinson hopped out and, to Weaver's surprise, returned to the truck holding the 3-foot-long iguana by the neck and tail.
: Back at the shop, Robinson and Weaver called the Hanover Borough police. The responding officer told them the department had no facilities to keep an iguana. So Robinson and Weaver corralled Curious in a cage they made from steel doors and a wire screen.
: They kept the iguana there until the store opened Monday. Then, Robinson took it to Newcomb's.
: Robinson and Weaver described the iguana as aggressive. But Baumgardt, who had half a dozen scratch marks on her arms and chest, said Curious was just a bit scared.
: "Once I got him on my chest, he just calmed down," she said.
: A veterinarian will examine Curious this evening, checking the iguana for injuries it might have sustained in the escape, Green said.
