Tail Whipping

I just got my first iguana about a month ago and ever since then, every time I go to pick him up he starts whipping his tail. Mostly it hits against the sides of the glass. Well I noticed that his tail now looks all.... dented and battered. I'm afraid if he keeps this up he's going to break it or something. Is there anything I can do to keep him from hurting himself? Thanks in advance.
