ELECTRICITY HAZARDS

Ok people I thought up a new question since an "Electrical" fire happened early this morning about 5 blocks down the road from me. What are the hazards with having all this electrical stuff hooked up and running 24-7??? Any precautions that I should take? Surge protectors? Any info that will ease my mind at the moment will help. I am hopefully and I use that term lightly, hopefully going to buy my baby tomorrow, but I don't want to burn down the Apartment complex!!!!!
