In Reply to: Shirley back from the vet....beginning treatment for...... posted by RJ Mello on August 18, 2001 at 11:39:10:
: After listening to my description of her symptoms, doing a physical exam, fecal (with the tiny sample I was able to fish out of the bathtub this morning) and getting her weight, Dr. A. decided to begin treatment for possible systemic infection &/or vitamin A deficiency. He gave her a vitamin A shot (looked like appx .7 cc’s) and a little smaller shot of “amakacin” (I asked him to spell it for me). Plus he sent me home w/2 more amakacin hypo’s @ .2 cc’s each. I’m to touch base w/him after the 2nd shot (Tuesday), at which time, if the treatment is effective, I should be noticing a difference. If not, he’ll probably want to do bloodwork &/or an X-Ray. Today though, he didn’t feel her condition was critical.
: I’ve discussed it with him in the past and Dr. A is of the mind to (barring a critical condition) take treatment options 1 step at a time. My first inclination would have been to get the bloodwork &/or X-Ray done today, but I know where he’s coming from starting out slow, and am actually a little relieved that, although he recognized the symptoms I had noticed, his evaluation found things weren’t critical.
: Guess I’ll start e’searching for info on vitamin A deficiency now (not to mention a list of foods high in vitamin A). I left Dr. A some of Melissa Kaplan (kidney failure) info I printed last night and also Iz’s mom’s story. (Iz’s mom:. . .wasn’t that 2nd operation a hysterectomy? I recognize you & Iz’s names from “The IGGIES Network” E’group forum. At any rate, you all had quite a time of it!) .
: Shirley’s outside soaking up some rays right now, but before too long I’ll bring her inside for closer monitoring. I’ll continue the warm soaks, oral administration of fluids and will add slurries (gotta go back and look at the recipe on M.Kaplan’s site).
: Will keep you posted using “Shirley” somewhere in the subject line. (What kind of a name is that for an Ig? She came to me w/that name and I’m not big one changing them once given.)
: Keep everything crossed, that it turns out to be something so easily remedied.
