OK here goes...
Mader's lists Table 14-1 pg 150 Energy Equations Determined EXPERIMENTALLY for Various Reptile Species
For Lizards captive husbandry temps 86 degrees Metabolic Rate kcals/day = 28 x wt (in kilograms)
This standard metabolic rate is based on temps, and weight of reptile at rest and fasting. Normal breathing, inhalation, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide exhange, heart beat, other involuntary body functions with NO activity!
Then there is a UMR-the upper metabolic rate...which can be up to 2.5 x the standard metabolic rate depending on the temps, hormones, age, activity, stressors, health. There are also metabolic schedules in Mader's Table 14-2 with increments of 1.1, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0, then 2.5 x the standard metabolic rate.
Oh Bon...I hope yer with me so far...I STILL don't get it (what is an accurate amount of kcals per day any specific IG needs/expends with all these variables) anyway...ok back on task...
Say your ig is normal healthy 11 lbs. that's 5 kilograms or 5000 grams.
Equation would look like this:
28 x 5= 140 kcals a day=STANDARD METABOLIC RATE....MINIMUM amount of calories intake and expenditure to have normal body functions at rest/ fasting iggie
The equation for a normally active lizard that is eating and moving about...the metabolic rate increases to 32. So the normal daily calorie intake for an 11 lb ig would look like this...
32 x 5 (kilograms)= 160 MINIMUM SMR. (Im not sure why Maders has 110 for a reptile who's body weight is 5000 grams)
anyway...then if your going
Equation for Upper Metabolic Rate would look like this..say you have a hyped out active 11 lb ig..yeah right! lol Metabolism is up there (based on average temp 86)The high end (2.5) of UMR = 28x 2.5=70 x 5 (kilograms) =350 calories a day needed/used.
So any caloric intake from base range of 160 calories to 350 calories on the high end.
What's interesting to me is that I know what the BMR for an 11 lb human....its 60.9 x 5 (kilograms) -54= 250.50 calories needed/used per day to maintain. Maders makes reference that standard metabolic rate for reptiles is about half of what it is for mammals. 1/2 of 250.50 = 125.50 calories for an 11 lb reptile not far off the 110 SMR Maders lists.
Make sense?? Me neither ;-)lololol
