Received this e-mail from my favorite online "herp" vet after asking for membership requirements (including educational background& experience) to ARAV. I will NOW refer anyone seeking a herp vet to HerpVet Connection FIRST ARAV second...until certification to ARAV is a requirement. I'd heed Dr. Harkherp's suggestion that BEFORE using anyone listed by ARAV...ask questions about experience beforehand to get a feel if the vet really knows his stuff about our green guys & gals.
Dear Gina,
Veterinarians can become a member of ARAV, by paying yearly dues of $75-100.
This gives you the journal, and reduced rates for yearly meetings, etc.
It does not, however, prove that the vet is active with herps(as do any other vet associations).
In 2 to 3 years, there should be board certification for herp vets, which will include passing several tests, etc., to be considered certified.
In the meantime, it's best to have a person ask specific questions of the vet(ie number of herp patients they see, etc.) before using.
