I know it's hard not to think the worst even when the vet is trying to prepare you for it but you have to keep thinking he's gonna get better. Prayers can do miracles and we're keeping Rocko in ours. Have you tried calling around to find another specialist just to see what their opinion is on the info you have so far? It never hurts to call...they may think of something your current vet is over looking. Also calling around and searching the net will get rid of the helpless feeling your most likely feeling by just sitting and waiting for a phone call. If you need to talk, I'm here.
