In Reply to: heat pad & ventilation question posted by Julian on January 07, 1999 at 02:27:50:
: is it safe for an iguana to sleep UNDERNEATH a heat pad (one of those heat pads that humans would use and place on their cramped or sore body parts)? i used this heat pad (about the size of a notebook paper) as a blanket for my iguana. i use a red incandescant night light 75 watts, but it simply doesn't provide enough heat for my 7 month old ig (my iguana sleeps in a 30 gallon tank about 15 inches deep). my second question concerned ventilation. my iguana lived (during the daytime), in an 100 gallon tank, made with glass all around, and a wooden top/covering about 3/4 inch thick. this plank of wood has 48 TINY little holes poked in it for ventilation. i was wondering if this is sufficient. how much air do igs need, because my ig's tank feels like a sauna whenever the wooden lid is lifted open. sorry if i'm rambling, but any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!!
We use heating pads on low setting for our lizards instead of hot rocks. We nver had any problem but take temp of heat pads often to make sure they're not to hot. As for your cage vent., I don't feel like there is enough circulation of fresh air for your ig. Try screening on the top of your cage instead. With metal screening on top you can place heat lamps etc. and we use a blanket on the top of the screen to keep warmth in on cold nites(we live in central Fla). That's my opinion anyways.
