Rubbermaid-type. I've found that others can be too rigid and don't hold up well when drilling ventilation holes. The plastic tends to shatter. Relatively inexpensive. Can be lined with newspaper or old sheets. They can hold humidity somewhat- moreso than a dog crate or cat carrier.
If heating is a concern, a power inverter can be purchased from a Wal-Mart or Radio Shack type store. Plugs in to a cigarrette lighter and gives you one (or more) 110 volt outlet. Into that you can plug a human heating pad and keep your ig warm. You may want to consider this option anyway as you would then be able to use the A/C in the car and still keep warm.
Make sure that you have enough food and water on hand for the trip. Mist frequently. I'm jealous - I used to spend a week in Hatteras every September as part of a working vacation. Have fun !!!!
