Iguana found in downtown Eureka
July 25, 2001

EUREKA -- In case you're wondering, a character from Jurassic Park 3 hasn't leapt out of the screen to terrorize the residents of Eureka. More likely, a hungry iguana took advantage of a seldom offered chance at escape and hit the road in search of lunch and a sun-bath.
City of Eureka animal control officers recovered a lost 3-foot iguana somewhere in the center of Eureka. Mum's the word about exactly where he was found -- the city intends to use that information to identify the rightful owner of the escapee.
This much is known -- he had to belong to somebody, because the wild iguana population in Humboldt County is negligible. Therefore, the city requests that if you have any information regarding the owners of the lizard, call Jackie Simpson at 441-4327. If she is unavailable, you can call the Police Department's front desk at 441-4060.
And the next time you see a trailer for a dinosaur movie in which the big lizard runs through city streets, you'll know it came to an alley near you.

Lizard on lamb has residents making calls
July 26, 2001

The Times-Standard
EUREKA -- Nearly 40 calls were made to Eureka Animal Control concerning the rightful owners of the wayward iguana found in the center of town Tuesday.
One of the callers said the right things, so by the time you read this the reptile should be safe and sound at home.
Animal Control Officer Jackie Simpson said more than half the calls were from citizens stating that they had read or heard about two separate iguanas reported missing in the Eureka area, one from a local school and the other from a car parked at a local grocery store.
Both of these had been found before the latest lizard runaway came to the attention of local media.
Simpson did receive a call from a man who stated the iguana pictured in the Times-Standard belonged to a roommate of his who occassionally let the animal into the backyard for a break from the monotony of modern living. The man claimed that the iguana escaped from the backyard.
The location he described fit the location of where the animal was found, and the owner was scheduled to pick the iguana up on Wednesay evening.
Cared for overnight by members of the Eureka Police Department, the five-star amenities included a cardboard cage, food, water and a heat source -- the same that can be expected for any Humboldt County prisoner.
