OTTAWA SUN (Ontario) 26 June 01 Crash Rocks Reptiles - Iguana Breaks Leg in Ottawa Collision (Andrew Seymour)
An injured iguana was the only casualty of a crash that totalled a car full of exotic creatures yesterday.
Olivia the iguana suffered a broken leg after zookeeper Jen McDonald’s Volkswagen Jetta was rammed from behind while she was stopped on St. Laurent Blvd. at about 1:50 p.m.
“The containers were just completely shattered,” said McDonald, who works at Little Ray’s Reptile Adventure and had just finished a demonstration at an elementary school.
McDonald had Olivia and 11-foot-long, 50-lb. male Burmese python Eros ‘in the trunk. of her car when she was hit from behind by two men in another car.
The force of the collision crushed the car’s trunk, sending the nearly four foot-long iguana scrambling onto the busy road. A frightened Eros then curled his massive, muscular body around a metal bar in the mangled car.
With a car full of bizarre creatures freed from their now-lidless containers — including a tarantula, a tree frog, a snapping turtle, a tortoise and a millipede — emergency crews were caught off guard by the strange collection of potential patients.
“The firefighters and paramedics were trying to take Eros out but he wouldn’t let go,” said McDonald.
An employee from the nearby OC Transpo garage provided new containers for Eros and Olivia, who were taken along with the other animals to a nearby pet store. Olivia was taken to an animal hospital, where a splint was attached to her broken leg and vitamins prescribed to speed her recovery.
