I've taken a look at the pic of Erin's ig and I hate to say it but I agree that there is something going on there. What sticks in my mind the most right now is the quote from JS's site that "....your vet will be able to recognize the signs of MBD...." paranoid as I have become, I have to say that not all vets, herp qualified included, will be able to tell. Heck, people have heard the story we tell about the well known local herp vet who dropped the ball when we took Mel to him. We had her x-rayed and WE could see eggs on the film buthe swore up down and sidewards that there were none. Long story short -25 eggs 3 weeks later.
As far as MBD treatments are concerned, keep feeding high calcium veggies BUT remember that w/o good UVB all the Ca in the world won't do any good. Igs have to be producing D3 in order to process calcium. Low UVB levels, low D3 production, low calcium absorption. It is for that reason that we've made the decision to switch to Active UV bulbs. The math just makes sense both cost and efficiency-wise. Why have marginal UVB levels when you can multiply them by approximately 10 for the same amount of money over the course of a year? Incidently - UV output from these is roughly equivalent to levels in the shade on a sunny day. Not even close to direct sunlight exposure.
Be careful of the TUMS use. While they ARE a good calcium source, using them too frequently has been rumored to trigger seizures in igs. Haven't witnessed it personally but have heard it.
If you are questioning MBD enough, an x-ray WOULD give you an excellent idea of bone density.
As far as free roaming - again, if MBD is a possible issue make sure that she doesn't get TOO rambunctous - bones are easily broken and VERY difficult to heal with MBD.
As far as cats - take a look at Jimmie's page on our site. WARNING - graphic picture. Jimmie now after a cat attack 2 1/2 years ago that took an eye and part of her face.....
Erin, if you'd feel more comfortable, contact any (or all...) of us individually. There is a lot of info floating around and it's not always easy to keep straight. In the long run, we only want the best for both your ig and you.....;)
