a healthy, happy ig should live 20 yrs ...
if you're not willing to make that kind of commitment, they're not for you ...
and they are definitely NOT for everyone ...
and igs aren't the same "kind" of pet as say, a dog or cat ... they are + always will be, a *wild* animal ~ they DO NOT "tame" ~ they CAN learn to trust + i believe care for/love their human, but they do not "tame" in the way dogs do ~ it's just not "who they are" ...
they are a High Maintenence animal ~
you can't just give it a bowl of "ig chow" every morning + call it good ... they have very specific dietary needs and very specific housing needs ~ (which are HUGE btw ~ iZ has his own room ...) ...
they need a set daily routine that they can rely on + tend to get upset over even very minor changes in the routine or in their environment ...
they need to spend quality time with their human on a daily basis ...
because it is close to impossible to duplicate their natural environment + food, they are susceptible to illness ...
their medical care tends to be expensive and difficult ~ in some areas, qualified ig-vets don't seem to exist ...
do ALOT of research/reading + asking questions BEFORE you get an ig!!!
some links for you:
MK's Giant Green Iguana Care
The Basking Spot
with all of that said ~ iZ has been with me 4.5 yrs and i love him with all my heart ... but i don't think of him as "my pet" ~ he's a zillion times MORE than that ...
Bon.
