Calgary (Southam): Iggy's excellent adventure came to an arresting end Sunday when police rounded up the one-metre-long iguana and carted him off to the slammer for trespassing on his neighbours' property.
The 4-1/2-year-old green iguana, who rules the roost at his Midnapore home, pulled off the great escape from his backyard around 11 a.m. and was soon peeping in his neighbours' windows before being collared.
``I didn't know what to do with him so I just picked him up and put him in the (police) van,'' said Sgt. Andy Comber. ``He kind of enjoyed the ride I think.''
The pair cruised around for about 45 minutes. Iggy, who weighs in at about 4.5 kilograms, was put in a holding cell.
Iggy's owner, Yvonne Talbourdet, has had the rambunctious reptile for nearly five years and said this is the first time he's ventured out of the yard on a sightseeing adventure.
``He goes out on our deck all day,'' said Talbourdet. ``We have a six-foot-high fence but I guess there's a little gap, and he was just small enough to get through.''
When Talbourdet discovered Iggy was missing, she went on a hunt through the southeast neighbourhood and was finally told by a neighbour that her pet had been taken away by officers.
``Let me tell you, I didn't expect to find him in a jail cell,'' said Talbourdet. ``(Iggy's) very curious and he has tremendous eyesight. He has no problem being in a car. He probably enjoyed the ride.''
Police spared Talbourdet a ticket for the roaming iguana. By late Sunday afternoon, Iggy was back on the family's porch ``ruling the house.''
This is the second time in less than two weeks city officers have had to capture a reptile on the loose.
District 1 cops had to coral a 3.1-metre boa constrictor after it fell off the back of a truck downtown July 3. The snake, who had allegedly been stolen just days before , was claimed by its owner at a southeast animal clinic
