Leaping lizard! Man finds iguana

By Karen Madden
Of the News-Herald

WISCONSIN RAPIDS - When Dan Gallagher went to get his mail Friday afternoon, he also got the shock of his life.

Sitting on Gallagher's front porch was a 3 1/2-foot iguana.

"I came around the corner to get my mail and there it was," he said. "He was beautiful."

The iguana had orange legs, a green body and a fin along its back, Gallagher said. He quickly went to his garage, got a net normally used to catch musky and netted it. He then placed it on the grass in the sun and called the Wood County Sheriff's Department. Officers called the South Wood County Humane Society to come and get the animal, Gallagher said. The officers didn't touch it, he said.

"Nobody wanted to hurt it," he said.

Gallagher said he was told the animal is worth between $300 and $400. "It must be somebody's pet that got away," he said.

Gallagher said he didn't believe a newspaper delivery boy who told him he had seen the iguana last week. "It was quite a shock to see an animal from Cancun (Mexico)," he said.

Anyone who has information about the animal or its owners should call the Humane Society at (715) 423-0505.

Madden writes for the Daily Tribune, Wisconsin Rapids
