Hi. This is Laura from Corucia Conservation Alliance. Those of you at the iguana forum may be of help to our cause. We are doing research on the issue of the need of an essentially crepuscular reptile like Corucia zebrata (the Monkey Skink of the Solomon Islands) for UV lighting. As you all likely know, many herpers do not believe any nocturnal lizards require UVB to live a healthy, quality life. However, there is a huge debate going on regarding this issue because 1. Corucia is actually crepuscular and 2. Known evidence suggests Vit D3 can only be utilized either from livers of freshly killed and consumed prey, or from the sun; and since Corucia is vegetarian, the sun would be the only source of D3 manufacture and utilization by the body in this case.
There have not been any conclusive studies done on Corucia in particular, but research done on a better-known vegetarian lizard such as the green iguana may offer some insight. If anyone knows of good books or journal articles (veterinary or otherwise scientific) on this topic, I would be indebted to those who could give me the information. Thank You.
