Woman adopts injured iguana
July 20, 2001
FALLS, Pa. -- A homeless 4-foot iguana which was calmly walking down a road in Pennwood Crossing yesterday has a new home thanks to several boys who felt sorry for the injured critter and called animal control.
"Its lower jaw was caved in," said Keith Hadfield, 13, who was with friends Marc Carlin, 14, and Dan McManamon, 12, when they spotted the greenish reptile walking on the blacktop.
"It was whipping its tail at us," said Hadfield.
"Everybody was scared, but not me. I just picked it up and put it on my shoulder. I guess it sensed I wasn't scared of it," he said.
After unsuccessfully searching for the lizard's owner, the boys called the Falls Township animal control officer, who drove to the mobile home park to take the iguana off the boys' hands.
The officer took the lizard to Pets Plus on Lincoln Highway, which found a woman willing to adopt the animal almost immediately.

Pet store manager Brent Ayres said the animal's "old" wound washealed, and the lizard seemed to be eating normally despite not having half its lower jaw.
"Actually, other than missingits lower jaw, it seemed pretty fat and healthy," Ayres said.
The pet's new owner said she planned to take the lizard to the Makefield Veterinarian Center to have it checked out.
