In Reply to: Not true....majority of iglets aren't captive bred...they're imported! posted by BabyHerp on July 20, 2001 at 03:45:57:
I read that neutering male ig's is very risky...what was your experience w/ yours? I want mine neutered but am afraid to do so now.
: El Salvador is the only country exporting farm raised green iguana. @175,000 made their way into the US last year. Pet stores buy them at about $1.50-2.50 a piece. Sell them for $8-15.oo to Joe Schmoe....and $300++ in accessories and supplies, per iguana. Not a bad profit for THEM! Not many people captive breed their iguanas, there isn't a market for them for one...pet stores won't buy them for more than a couplea bucks. If we can get El Salvador/ Fluker Farms to stop exporting them here....then there may be a reason to advocate captive breeding. Captive bred is always better than imports (disease/parasite wise).
: My male ig is neutered, my female ig is spayed...that's where I stand on breeding green iguana.
