I agree that they need to be more educated...Although my experiences w/ Petco were not bad it didn't take me long to realize they needed more education in the ig area. I guess I didn't think much of it because I never take anyone's word for it...especially someone who is trying to sell me something. I will admit I didn't know 1 thing about ig's until *after* I brought my first one home. Then I started checking into all the stuff the petstore guy told me to see how much of it was true...after all, he was trying to sell me something so how could I believe him? I'm not saying even the Petco I visited couldn't use some improvement...education is the key to everything. I didn't see any sick or unhealthy looking animals in the Petco I visited but if they were kept long enough I'm sure there would be due to lack of education.

: Consider yourself lucky then, Bonnie. You are in the minority from everything that I've heard and the stores that I have dealt with. My personal experience with the majority of "reptile experts" employed in stores that I have patronized is that many of them are poorly trained, largely uneducated about the animals that they sell and are extremely closed-minded when someone attempts to assist them with education. On occassion they even get in animals that they have no idea as to how to care for them.
: Example: Several years ago a New England PetCompany shop was rumored to have received a shipment of snakes from Africa. Rumor also has it that when it came time to feed them, an employee witnessed one of the snakes strike it's prey and release. Several seconds later, the live prey item began convulsing and died. Any guesses as to what species of snake it was ?
: From feeding crickets and chicken to iguanas to keeping Mali Uros in the genpop tanks that are kept at a standard 80*. Oh, and the reason for that temperature, I was told, is that that is a median temperature for just about everything that they sell. In other words, everything can survive at that temperature for at least a little while. Ever wonder why so many reptiles that come out of pet stores never make it ?
: There's a lot to be said for "the little guy" in many businesses. Unfortunately, when it comes to animals, corporate America usually wipes them out and replaces them with extreme mediocrity. Unfortunately, the number of educated and caring pet shops are becoming more and more scarce.

: Wow.... I hate it when that soapbox sneaks up on me like that.....
