sometimes igs get sick because they're not getting the proper care ~ there's alot of MIS-information out there, so not getting proper care does not always mean that the person doesn't care ~ they just need to learn, as we all did at one time ...
and sometimes ~ bad things happen to good igs who have good humons ... igs are wild animals ~ they are darned good at hiding the fact that they are sick until they are REALLY SICK ...
if you are serious about adopting, FIRST make sure there is a qualified ig-vet in your area ... (+ NOT every vet who claims to BE one, really IS ...) ... that was been my biggest mistake + IS my biggest regret ... find the vet BEFORE you need one ...
and ask ALOT of questions!!
