You asked for the main difference and that is it! I have 3 Water Dragons and My 5 year old is full grown at 8inches STV. A full-grown iguana can get up to 24inches STV!! SO basically look at the total length of your Water dragon and imagine that just being the body of an iguana and add another 3-4ft of tail!
These are GIANT lizards with the capability of being the sweetest or the meanest lizards around depending on temperment. If you are adopting one from a rescue they will be able to help you choose one with a sweet disposition.
But iguanas take ALOT more time and care than any of the Herps you have now! I spend about 1.5 hours A DAY taking care of my Frodo. He gets a bath in the morning and at night and needs his cage cleaned and water changed and food prepared! It basically is like having a 2year old child! (minus the day-care while you are at work)
Sorry to go on and on but you wanted to know the "nitty gritty" LOL.
My Frodo is currently 32 inches long. He was a rescue and has grown 4 inches in 3 months. To say that they won't get over 3 ft is not accurate.
Please check out the Colorado reptile rescue site (I gave the link) and you can see the LARGE iguanas up for adoption.
Good luck! I would also recommend buying and reading "iguanas for dummies" before making the final decision. I did and it really helped me understand what I was really getting into!
