I think as Candace mentioned, surprisingly not as hot as one would think. The heat production is actually a by-product of the UV process. The heat thrown from the 160 flood that we have really doesn't travel much more than 12-16" away from the bulb. However, this could quite possibly be different when using a spot bulb. We haven't tried a spot yet, but the recommended minimum distances for spots are quite a bit more than the minimums for floods. According to David Krughoff's Reptile Lighting 2000, I believe the minimum distance for a 160 SPOT bulb is between 36" & 72". Think about that, a bulb recommended to be placed between THREE and SIX FEET AWAY from a reptile as opposed to within 12".
According to David's measurements, which were taken with a hand held radiometer, the UVB microwatt output was comparable to the amount of UVB received in the shade under natural sunlight. These bulbs also produce UVA as well.
If you think about it for a minute, the investment really isn't much more than uv tubes -especiallyif you're buying them from pet shops. At $35 a pop x2 a year that's 70$ for a year's worth of "5%" (which really isn't even accurate - 5% of what ?) fluorescent uvb. On the other hand, ONE Active bulb is GURANTEED to last one year. It is possible that they can actually go more than that although the only real way to tell is if you can take measurements yourself. And I believe the cost of a bulb is somewhere in the vicinity of $56. In the long run, you're not spending much, if any, more for a bulb that lasts as long as 2 tubes and literally produces up to 10x more UVB and 100% (I believe) more UVA.
We've been on the phone with Joe at Active several times in the last few weeks discussing the bulbs and after those conversations, combined with the results we are seeing 1st hand, I can honestly say that we are switching everyone here over to Actives as soon as the cashflow allows. Infact, we have three more enroute as we speak and will hopefully arrive on Monday.
Feel free to drop us a line directly if you have any more Q's. We'll be more than happy to try to answer them for you....
