Manchester man charged with hurting girlfriend, torturing pet iguana
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A man faces domestic and animal abuse charges after a fight in which police say he beat his girlfriend and tortured her pet iguana.
Nathan Howard, 21, of Manchester, is accused of pushing Jennifer Duval three times as she tried to rescue her iguana, Iggy, from the freezer Saturday.
According to police, Howard threw the pet in the freezer after the animal bit him.
"Nope, not done yet," he said after opening the door a few minutes later, according to police.
Ten minutes later, he allegedly grabbed the iguana, sliced it with a steak knife and threw it off the porch.
Duval told police she never saw Howard actually cut the animal, but when he came back in the apartment, "he had blood on his hands and the knife," according to police affidavits.
He also is accused of grabbing Duval, 24, by her hair, cutting some of it off with scissors, kneeing her in the side and throwing her out of the apartment.
"I’m gonna cut your precious hair," Howard told the woman, according to the affidavits.
Howard was arrested Wednesday and was arraigned Thursday on six simple assault charges, a reckless conduct charge and a cruelty to animal charge.
A judge in Manchester District Court set his bail at $20,000.
Howard, who is due back in court July 19, also is on probation for a felony criminal threatening charge, a prosecutor said.
