Alert as 4ft iguana escapes
by Danielle Gusmaroli
A South African Iguana with a dislike for women has gone missing from his home.
The 4ft lizard, called Iggy, is on the run after climbing out of his tank at his home in Benfleet, Essex. Police were immediately alerted after the owner warned the reptile has sharp claws and tends to jump at women.
Officers believe he has crawled into Appleton primary school, which is 200 yards from the lizard's home, and are warning staff and pupils to be on their guard. A police spokeswoman said: "He is huge and we are worried he may have gone looking for some sunshine.
"He has sharp claws and a long whipping tail. Iggy may be a pet but he has a potential to be dangerous. Teachers at Appleton School will be asked to tell children to be careful and keep an eye out for him on the school field. There is concern that children may find him sunbathing during playtime."
The lizard's owner is said to be "very upset" over his disappearance. Members of the public are warned not to approach Iggy if they spot him basking in the sun.
