Three weeks ago the local animal shelter called us to ask if we would take in a sicly iguana that wandered up someone's driveway. The local animal shelter does not as a rule take in reptiles, is not set up for them equipment wise and doesn't really have anyon on staff who can take care of them. As cramped as we were for space, we said yes. Skeeter, the 2 foot wonder, came home with us.
The following week they called us again, this time animal control had been called to come get an iguana a little under 4 feet long. This time, we had to say no, we just didn't have anywhere to put her. We did promise to go over to the shelter and fix up temporary digs for her. When we arrived she was in an aquarium less than half her length because that was all they had. For the next two hours we tried to set up something better, soothes her and gave her a bath. While we were there one of the volunteers showed a large interest in adopting her, he had the space and was willing to learn all he needed to know. He asked us if we would take her home for 2 or 3 days while he got set up. Three days later he called us and told us that he changed his mind.
In the mean time, the iguana had to be treated for a broken and bleeding toe in addition to a bacterial infection. Once more we pulled out our checkbook to pay a vet bill for an animal that isn't ours ... even worse, our regular vet was on vacation and the hospital we could find to see the iguana was 45 minutes away and charged us their full fee.
Mr D and I have almost never said no or turned our back on an iguana in need. However, this time we just really had no way to house this beauty and killed us that she was stuck in a large dog crate for most of the day. Not knowing what else to do, we decided that on Tuesday, when we were both going to be home, we would call the animal shelter and tell them they needed to find a better solution for this iguana.
Before I could get a call in, they called me to tell me that her owner had surfaced! She got out while he was away on business and his room mate never bothered to call the animal shelter (who had left a card on his door). That afternoon I spoke to her owner to find out her name is Janeane, she is five years old and a free roamer. Her owner was supposed to come over the next day but through a calamity of errors, not the least of which was his car breaking down, it never happened. This worked out well as we had a local vet coming over for a consultation later that day. During our initial phone conversation the owner let it be known that he was very torn over what to do with Janeane, this is not the first time she has gotten out and he feels that due to his time constraints he isn't around enough. I told him that we would be willing to work him whatever he decided but he should know that she is in good hands with us. The next day came and went with no phone call.
Today her owner called and came over. What a nice guy, not to mention a responcible person! From all the things he tells us, which is obvious from looking at Janeane, he takes very good care of her. The problem is, if he forgets to close a window, she is gone through the screen. We gave him some ideas on how to make things safer and a little better for Janeane, he has decided to see what he can do about implimenting those changes! We all decided that while Janeane needs her bandages changed every three days and medication given, we could help her human out by continueing to care for her. Changing bandages is much easier with 2 humans around and we can keep her a little more contained while she heals ... He even cut us a check for the vet care we provided with extra money for housing her and is going to make a donation to the animal shelter.
Sorry this is so long but I just wanted to share a good story for a change! All too often iguana stories do not have any happiness in them! What a nice change of events!
