Unfortunately animal control/humane societies don't have the the resources or manpower to attend to all dietary requirements some animals need when they confiscate & house them on a temporary basis. I don't have a problem with cat food on a temp basis. Its not the best but no different/better than pet stores feeding iguanas commercial iguana food or lettuce on a LONG term basis while waiting for buyers, yet everyone feels free to bash them!
From personal experience: Went to investigate a complaint a couplea years ago at a pet store where this sweetheart of a female iguana about 3 feet long in a 20 gallon long tank, just through egging (@60 eggs according to the owner) kept in the dark, with a low watt chandelier lamp as only heat source, on wood chips, fed iceberg lettuce and carrots. There taped to the front of the tank...instructions from humane society in Santa Monica, CA. specifying dietary requirements:
lettuce and carrots!! The pet shop wanted $150 for her. After I got thru with them and threatened to return in 2 weeks (unannounced) with animal control if they did not improve her situation....they got her a uvb lamp, removed wood chips, used astroturf panels, switched to dark leafy greens & commercial iguana food (better than what she was getting!), got proper heating element, and I left them my homemade caresheet.
Only thing we can do is TRY and enlighten pet stores, humane societies, zoos etc. Getting them to drink is another thing! Nothing is etched in stone....thinking of Susan Donoghue and her Quantum Iguana diets! Dried egg in it! ACKKK oh well! She's still a GOD in many people's eyes.
