The problem with some of the external differences mentioned, is that they may not occur if the animal is dominated by another one, i.e. two males kept together can really LOOK like a male and a female. The masculine features may not develop on the lower ranked male.
Another thing, I've seen females that where really orange, though its usually the males that tend to turn orange. The spikes can also be long on a female!
Male vs female in choise: Males tend to become more aggressive when the get sexually mature ( 2-4 years of age ), but, in my oppinion, more beautiful in both their posture and fysical looks. The problem with females may be that they may get eggbound ( which is a quite normal problem if kept in the wrong environment, and on the wrong diet ).
