It's a good thing that you are responsible enough to feel that hving an igg and a child are ok and that the rules have been enforced. Good hygeine and proper attention are all both the children and iggys need. On the other forum that I have been checking (the Delphi.com, green iguana enthusiasts forum)...I advised a lady who wanted an iguana for her six year old boy but she also had one on the way...by the way a first-timer with any kind of reptile. My immediate response was something to the point of "make sure the kids are taken care of before considering the iguana". Basically I INTENTIONALLY tried to discourage her by saying children are more sensitive to salmonella because I would have hated a future post that could say "well...need to get rid of this iguana now..what should I do?" or even worse, "the iguana bit my child while I wasn't there"...I shudder to think of potential irresponsibility and lack of education contributing to salmonella infections or a malnourished igg! I dunno...just my thoughts...at first I didn't realize how much I needed to know about caring for iguanas, but now that i know, I don't think most people should even have them...it's kinda weird how the knowledge breeds more doubt than ignorance. anyway, just some thoughts...take care all.
: YESSSSSS.......People can be a little paranoid~ but hey some people say you should get rid of your cats too! I mean what if they suffocate your kids?? Okay here is the deal Kids and Igs and yes even cats can live together~ You just don't have your kids living in the same cage as your pets~hehehe~ You have to wash your hands after cleaning and or holding your pets. Do not let them freeroam around your children without supervision~ Yes antibacteria soap works fine. It makes me a little angry when people tell someone that they have to abandon all there pets because they are going to have a baby!~ My daughter loves our little Zoo and I have had no problems with her. If i was going to have another baby i would just make sure my house was babyproof~Once they get a little older they are going to love having pets around~ My daughter is always begging me for more animals!LOL~ A little girl that likes snakes~ what is the world coming too!hehehe~ I think i am still a little mad at my mother-in-law who tried to tell me I had to get rid of my cats now that i was pregnant~ I tried my best not to laugh at her~ My cats actually acted very possesive of my daughter when she was small and were her little gaurdians~ My daughter is now 5 years old and couldn't be healthier~ She knows all the rules of the reptiles as she grew up with them~She is a little wary of Miya the Mean though as he tried to mate with her foot!LOL~ She was sitting there wiggeling her toes and somehow this looked appealing to Miya~ he kinda grabbed her foot without breaking the skin!(how come when he bites me there is a big flesh wound?) I had to pry his mouth open and she was more shocked than hurt~ Now when Miya is out she hides her toes and tells Miya not to eat them!hehehe~ Thank goodness the breeding season seems to be over! I do not see having reptiles as a "RISK" to my kid~ You just have to use common sence and be clean~ You don't let your baby play with raw chicken(which carried samonilla) just like you don't let your baby play with Igs~ When they are older you can enforce the washing hands after touching rule~ Hope I helped~ sorry so long I just couldn't imagine throwing away a pet over something so stupid~
: : Have any of you had a baby or have taken care of a baby while having an ig? I was on this one site, and somebody wrote that they were about to have a baby and people have told her to get rid of her ig because it was too much of a health risk for the baby. I was just wondering about this cause sometime in the future I would like to have kids, and this health risk has me concerned. Can babies/young kids and igs live together?
: : Also, is antibacterial soap and a good hand washing enough to disinfect yourself after handling an ig, or do you need something stronger? thanks.
