In James Hatfield Ultimate Green Iguana Manual, and Doug Mader's Reptile Medicine & Surgery chapter on Nutrition co-written by Susan Donoghue advise feeding a mature iguana EVERY OTHER DAY!! ALL THEIR LIVES!!! These are authorities in Iguana/Reptile Care! I dare ANYONE to call these people "CRUEL" in their reccomendations.
Up until maybe a year or so ago....I too fed my iguanas every other day based on these 2 'authorities'.
BUT know this:
when I did feed my igs every other day...my igs were not the healthiest.
My female had elevated uric acid levels, and my male was showing dehydration(PVC)in blood levels prior to his orchidetomy.
If feeding an iguana every other day, I'd make sure he is getting 80-100% humidity throughout the day he does not eat. Remember he's cooking under hot lamps 10-12 hours a day. So ya got to make sure he's hydrated (intake & enviroment) Iguanas only take in water thru their mouths...so if he isn't drinking, he's gotta get fluids from the water content of food (which besides ^humidity, is best for keeping an ig hydrated). Chronic dehydration is STILL one of the biggest killers of captive green iguana to date.
In the spring & summer months Isis SHOULD be wanting to eat more tho ...you may want to recheck his enviroment (temps, uvb, humidity) and have a wellness check thru the vet if YOU are worried about his intake.
I could NEVER label a person "CRUEL" for their iguana missing ONE day of food (for Pete's sake)!!
Some people just have a need to jump down other people's throats the minute they read one thing they disagree with without consideration of anything other than jumping up on a soapbox. I know Im one of those people! ***but trying harder NOT to be***
Don't sweat the small stuff! READ, Keep Informed, and KEEP POSTIN! Only way we LEARN!
