It should be no further than 12 inches from your iguana. I have heard of people putting them on the sides too, but I figure if it is above them over their basking area, it is hitting the entire length of them at 12" or less (my basking area is very high). More than one isn't a bad idea, but our cage wasn't designed for ones on the side.
