Yes it sounds like he is threatening you in that case. Our iguana played dead when we got him as well (very strange) but he would only do that for so long before he would gator roll and freak out, trying to get away from us! You need to spend a lot of time with your iguana...short periods several times per day. You should take him out of the cage, talk softly, offer treats, maybe put a shirt with your scent in his cage.

I will give you some links that may help. Just be patient because it takes a long time to build a trusting relationship....once he realizes you aren't going to hurt him or eat him, his behavior will gradually change.
