about the tail ... is there ANY tail left? does it look healed up or is it still open and/or have a scab?
igs will sometimes "drop" their tail as a defense mechanism ... (hopefully their predator goes after the tail and THEY escape) ... if something like that happened, it should probably heal ok ... if it was due to trauma of some sort, caught in a cage door, rough handling, etc., it may not have been as clean of a break ....
if your ig is in good health, he *shouldn't* have any problems and will *probably* regrow a tail ....
with ANY "new" ig, it is a VERY good idea to take him to a reptile vet for a check up ... the vet can also tell you how well your iggy's tail is healing and prescribe medicine if needed ....
also extremely important is to have the vet do tests for parasites like worms (need a fresh poop sample!) ... that can and WILL greatly affect your ig's overall health and his ability to regrow a tail ... also blood tests for calcium level and kidey function are good .. but at the very least, check for parasites! they are very common, the same as they are with dogs + cats ....
if it is all healed up, it *probably* does not still hurt ... in fact, if he acts like it's still tender to the touch, i would worry that it wasn't healed up yet ....
long term effects: if he regrows a tail. it won't quite match ... it won't be the saqme color--wise as the original ..... if it DOESN'T grow back, he may have some problems balancing on skinny climbing branches and climbing .... (plus the other igs MAY laugh at him ... kids are like that ya know ....)
go to a vet and check out some of the ig websites:
http://www.escape.com/~iggyden/
and
http://thunder.sonic.net/~melissk/ig_care.html
are two excellant sitges wqith diets that are widely used ...
and come back here if you have more questions!!!
Best o' luck to you and your iggy!
