MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS (UK) 11 May 01 Fire crews rescue iguana from flooded flat
An iguana had to be rescued from a flooded flat after its owner disappeared.
Fire crews were called to Black Carr Road, Baguley, Wythenshawe, after water started seeping through the ceiling into a shop below.
They used a ladder to get into the apartment where they found the two-and-a-half foot long green reptile suffering from cold.
A fire service spokesman said the animal, which needs to be kept warm, was in good condition and had been left with food and water but was extremely cold and was not moving.
The taps had been connected to a washing machine and water was pouring into the flat.
It was unclear whether the owners intended to return for the creature and the RSPCA was called.
Animal collection officer Paul Wallis is looking after the reptile until it can be homed with a specialist.
He said: ''I have picked up some strange animals but never an iguana.
''It is quite big, its body is about a foot long and its tail is another foot and a half. I don't really have the right facilities to keep it and will be moving it on soon. We need to find out who owns it.''
