Dave: I live in C.A. and see spiny tails every day. I have a nice female that is about 1.5 feet now. I really enjoy these lizards because I have found them to be cheap(free here!), hardy and easy to maintain. These lizards can be found in some of the least expected places. Usually in the walls or roof area of cement buildings. They are always found nearby a tunnel or hole in the cement. If disturbed, they will dash into the hole without hesitation. My female has tamed down quite a bit. She will run right up to my hand and permit petting while she is feeding. They eat the regular iguana foods but are also supposed to eat a fair amount of protein. Mine will only eat the greens and things so I supplement the proteins in with beans and peanut butter. You may want to try insects or pinkies first. Well, keep posting your experiences with your spiny tail and best of luck!
