injured tail

i don't know WHAT iZ does up in his room while i'm at work! i noticed last night that his tail was just hanging kinda funny and tonight when i looked and poked further, i realized that the last 12" of tail are totally limp AND seem to have no feeling .... and he doesn't have control over that 12" any more .... he tried to tail whip me on the way to supper tonight and his tail won't cooperate .... he was a grouch last night and tonight he's just downright NASTY .. thought it was just cuz he's overdue to poop, but it could be due to his tail too ..... it's not swollen ... when he's just sittin' there, you can't *see* anything wrong with it (the skin's not broken, no obvious lumps or bumps ...) i don't think he needs a vet .... i think he just needs some extra TLC .... but i'm worried about him losing that part of his tail ... i don't know who'd be more depressed, him or me .....
any experience with this????
