JAPAN UPDATE 09 May 01 Iguana scares residents in Naha City
An iguana about one meter long was discovered in a river in Mihara, Naha City, Friday. Local residents called the police after they found the big reptile.
Despite the best efforts by the crews of two police cruisers and a fire engine, the iguana was too quick to be caught. The reptile was discovered in the river where it stood still as it were dead, but as soon as a police officer went in the river to catch it, it quickly swam away.
According to a pet shop owner, the iguana looks like the kind that eats grass and fruits, and does not attack humans. The police suspect the iguana’s owner had thrown his exotic pet away because it had grown too big. Police stated that they would contact the prefecture health center to discuss what they should do about the scary looking new inhabitant in their city.
