This is true of all animals, I suppose...you are right. I mean, I don't go out and bring ANY living creature into my home without having read up on them and talked to 100 or so people first...bought the books, set up the living areas...etc...no impulse purchases when it comes to family members...
people do need to take time prior to any animal purchase.
But ont he other hand, to say that NO petstore should sell these creatures is also a bit shortsighted. What about a pet shop run by the breeders of various types of herps? My personal favorite petstore here is just such a place - the owners breed their animals and raise them, etc on seperate premises and then sell in a public shop. They place restrictions on who they sell what to...
I mean, if you really want to get down to it, none of us REALLY has the right to 'own' any living creature that would be better left in the wild...by buying these animals from ANYONE aren't we all supporting an industry that fosters the exploitation and abuse of all animals in general? Isn't anyone who ate a hamburger this afternoon for lunch doing the same thing?
Restrictions on animal availability will make the animals more valuable on the open international market - which will increase illegal black market activities - and result in even LOWER living standards for these animals...
I am not sure there IS one good answer to this problem except that better educational material be provided more readily through petshops for people to make their own choices...
(And i wasn't being REALISTIC about the hermit crab comment...it was just a contrast thing. I have 3 children at home, ages 4, 9, and 11 and NONE of them has been permitted to have their own pet...they learn animal care by helping me feed and care for our animals - but ALL animals remain under MY supervision. I think that any pet should be a 'family' member and everyone in the family should lvoe and respect it as such...**just to clear that up cause I know how it sounded :)**
Not meant to be confrontational or anything like that. For the most part I agree with you...but these thoughts came to mind as I was reading your post...
: Well I agree that baby iguanas shouldbe available to those of us who do care.
: My website is going to be geared at this subject exactly. No pet store should sell iguanas. NO PET STORE.
: Like puppies, we all know most puppies in pet stores are from puppy mills. So most of us go adopt one, or go to a local breeder where we can pick our puppy out, and talk to the breeder about the needs of that dog, is size expectations, etc. I believe it should be the same for iguanas. For those people who want a baby iguana, they should be sold be private breeders, where people can have a chance to A. think over there choice, because finding a breeder and stuff takes time, it might help people think twice. B. talk to the breeder and learn facts.
: Yes I know breeders aren't always good people, and don't do the best for animals. But like puppies again, the breeders who don't hold up standards won't get business for the main part. Clean kennels with strong bloodlines are where most puppies are sold. I feel the same situation would work with iguanas. Instead of seeing that cute iguana in the pet store, people will have to read about them and learn and contact breeders instead of having the abililty to make impulse buys. This will at least be a step in the right direction for iguanas.
: A 10 year old doesn't need a hermit crab either(which I personally keep quite a few of and trust me they are not easy pets to keep healthy). All animals deserve a responsible owner with the means and ability to deal with its needs, and care. No animal life is worth more than anothers in my eyes. No matter if it is a dog, cat, rat or iguana.
