Actually, this is a natural instict to get the minerals and nutrients out of the soil....but be careful with regular old yard dirt...who KNOWS what is in there...I would discourage the animals from eating unsanitary soil....when you take your little ones (or big ones) out...try to keep thm off the dirt areas...maybe on a patio area or deck or something...that will minimize the ingested materials.
