the hormonal surges of mating season can cause temporarily gritty urates ...
but yes, it can also be that they aren't getting enough moisture as well ... sprinkle their salads with water + crank up the sonic humidifier at nite for 'em, etc, etc! you know the drill! *grin*
if you're just now noticing it, i wouldn't worry too much, just try + get some extra moisture into 'em + keep an eye (finger!) on the urates ... if you're worried + it's not *too* stressful on the kids, you could give them small drinks from an oral syringe/eye dropper and get their system rinsed out a bit ...
this time o' year, i'd bet that hormones are a part of it tho ...
