are you under the impression that the ig will 'feel unfullfilled' (for lack of better words!)??? i know that some mammals feel the instinctive need to reproduce SO STRONGLY that they have false pregnancies ... is that what you're wondering about???? if so ~ that's not the case with igs ... once females become adults, they will generally lay eggs every year, *regardless* of if they've EVER been around a male ... again, i'm trying hard to NOT use the chicken comparison so i don't offend iZ's girlie-friends!!! but it IS the same sorta thing ... their bodies make eggs, regardless of their 'marital status') once mature, females form eggs every year + either lay them or re-absorb them ...

males???? well, at the risk of offending a whole lotta people ... a male is gonna be on a hormonal merry-go-round the entire time his particular mating season lasts Whether or NOT he is with a female ... a male ig could have an entire harem of girlie-igs and he'd *still* not be satisfied ... OH! i am biting my tongue here folks!!! *grin* ... no, the point i'm trying to make is, he's gonna feel just as grouchy + nutty + aggressive, whether he gets to have a "real" girl-friend or whether he has a "luv-sock" ... (+ at least the luv-sock won't bite him back!!! *grin*) ... give him space + he'll eventually get over it ...

as far as moral duty?? just to warn you *grin* ~ you've stepped into a forum where some of us are fiercely against breeding! there's too too many unhappy igs out there in captivity already and if we have a moral duty, it's to NOT add to the number of poorly cared for igs ... a female will lay 40-70 eggs, no one can find THAT many GOOD homes!

but seriously ~ neither male nor female igs *need* to be mated to be happy ... they *do* react to those hormonal surges + urges, but there *are* better ways to help them cope than to let another 50 iglets come into an un-nautral environment ...

and i REALLY hope this didn't come off as a lecture cuz it really sounds like you're more interested in the IG's happiness than anything!!!!

did this help answer your question????

Bon.
ps ... iZ is ALL male and when he goes into season, he seems waaaaaaaaaay more interested in showing ME affection than any girlie-ig! during mating season, my husband is NOT allowed any where NEAR me when iZ is in the room!!! iZ has been known to leave threatening notes warning hubby to back off .... *grin*)
