If you're concerned about the advice that your vet gave you, and judging by what you described you are and rightfully so, do your ig a favor and get a second opinion from a qualified vet instead of listening to some keyboard jockey who's going to give you instructions on how to mutilate your pet. Because, when it comes right down to it, if a procedure such as this isn't performed in a clean environment under controlled conditions by a qualified person with the necessary training it really is nothing more than mutilation and in the case of "home amputations" falls under animal torture in my book.
If you need to find another vet, try looking at www.arav.org. The members section should tell you who's close to your area. If you need any further help don't hesitate to ask.
