Fiberboard is the same thing as particle board. To most people anyway. In carpenter's terms, fiberboard is usually a lot denser than particle board. All this really means if you are building a cage is that fiberboard is going to be a lot heavier. As long as you are using any type of fiber/particle board, it is going to be difficult to clean and will absorb moisture. A lot of people will go ahead and try to paint wood like this, but it really is much more cost effective to just go ahead and buy Melamine. Melamine is a particle board with a surface similar to counter tops. It is very easy to clean, and does not absorb any moisture. I use melamine with all of my snake cages, and love it. It is available in several different colors, with white being my favorite. I have seen woodgrain melamine, but it usually tends to look "cheap".
Seriously, I would try to stay away from any kind of material that you will need to paint, stain, varnish, or coat. It is just going to be a headache later on.
Once again, my 2 cents.

: KIMBERLY: What is fiberboard??? (some kind of particle board?)
: TRAVIS: What kind of wood did you use for yours out of curiosity. We're probably going to start buying wood this weekend and are trying to figure out whether to go with the expensive grade wood (mostly Birch) or cheaper Pine (doesn't look as nice) Mostly it will come down to how much it all adds up to (with the tools we will buy etc.) but your wood is nice looking--that's why I ask.
