They do not need to lay on a rock to digest their food--- they need to be sufficiently warm & have UV light as well to digest their food properly & get the proper vitamins/minerals from their food.

You need to get a thermometer and check your cage temps. If the lamp doesn't keep him warm enough, you need to add more or redesign the cage so it holds heat a bit better.
