Iguanas can be sexed at a few months of age by probing...by a reptile vet or an experienced herper (usually always someone to show you how at a Herp Society meeting). Its very easy but you should have someone with experience guide you or do it the first time, as the cloacal membranes can be punctured if not done correctly or with the appropriate instrument. If you have access to 1-2 mm ball tipped probes...e-mail me for more info. Also I remember reading somewhere about sexing at @6 months of age (by a vet) using fecal smears to detect low levels of hormones and sex that way. There are no genetic labs doing DNA analysis on large lizards for sex determination available to the public YET...I called all over US and England last year and no ones doin em!
If you're like most people with baby iguanas you'll wind up having to WAIT IT OUT! At 12 months of age sexual dimorphic characteristics begin to present themselves (link below). Choose a generic name on a temporary basis, your iguana will learn its name even if you change it with time. Keep it simple 1-2 syllable names are best and easier on them.
