Heat rocks that have in-line rheostats are only marginally better than those that don't. The bottom line is that heat rocks can and do develop "hot spots" over the surface of the rock which can burn an animal.
Iguanas are built to take in the majority of heat from above as opposed to below. Their skin does not translate heat and cold the way ours does. Therefor, burn damage can occur long before an iguana realizes it.
Heat rocks have also been known to maifunction to the point of causing fires.
There are much better choices for heat sources than rocks. Spot bulbs, CHE's, radient heat panels are all much better alternatives. Feel free to drop us a line if you'd like to know more.
On a seperate note, I contacted ZooMed and asked why it is that they feel it necessary to produce rocks with, as well as without, in-line rheostats especially when they claim that rheostats are safer. I've been waiting for a reply for over a month now....Go figure....
