:::fresh food is better than canned food ... partly because there is so much salt (sodium) added to canned food ... fresh is just better ...
Hi Tiffany,
I agree with iZ's mom completely up there ^^^.
I would not feed canned green beans or any other canned food--ever. They are too high in sodium, and don't have near the nutrients that fresh (not frozen, either) foods do.
I just buy about 20 beans or so at a time and cut them up into little bite sized pieces one day at a time so they stay fresh and crisp. It's really not very time consuming--and so worth it to do it all fresh, especially when you see how beautiful and strong an iguana can become after being fed the right things. Tiffany, please look up the site iZ's mom left or you on the above post (Jen Swofford's pages) and really consider using a completely different diet. It's amazing to me that your ig could have lasted this long on the diet she's been given thus far! I'd love to hear how much better she does on this new diet; please continue to post on her and let us know about her progress. Remember, YOU are the only link to a long, healthy, happy life that your iguana has. If you don't read up on iguana care and apply what you've learned then she has no chance without you. I'm glad you cared enough to ask about her diet! You're doing well if you change it. I'm impressed that you're interested in doing better for her.
Changing your iguana's diet is sure to help her health improve. She will just LOVE the collard greens--both of mine do. When you get them home, be sure to wash them off in the sink, they separate them and lay them out on the table to dry for about a 1/2 hour, then put them neatly in a big ziplock baggie in the fridge. They will keep for a week this way. Feed her several leaves a day--but be sure to chop off the long stems so she can't choke on them.
One more thing: try changing her fruits too. Rasperries, strawberries, and blueberries are all my iguanas favorites. They have more nutrition in them than apples and celery do, and give the "iguana salad" a lot of color, which iguanas love.
Hope this helps...
Diana
