The others have all answered the question like we would have except ....
Mr. D builds the cages and we spend anywhere from $200.00 (that is when the building materials were free) up to $900.00 more or less (usually more esp. when we have to buy everything), that figure includes the complete structure, heat sources, light sources, etc.
We have a few 55 gallon aquariums that we can use in a pinch for a juvenile. If we don't have an enclosure, we beg, borrow and steal from where ever we can.
We NEVER house 2 together and when a new one comes in, they are usually put in the kitchen away from everyone else until they have been checked out by the vet.
Right now we are down to 4. One in the living room, one in the dining room, one in the office and one in the kitchen. We bought our house just under 2 years ago and have already outgrown it!
How do we take them in??? That's a hard question to answer. If you were to ask why we'd tell you because we can't stand to see any animal suffer. If you're asking time wise, we can because I work from home and Mr D owns his own business. Money wise it can be tough and there are times we have gone without because it was a tight month and someone needed a vet visit. We own our home so we don't have to answer to a landlord. Sometimes we get lucky and someone makes a donation in the way of supplies, building materials, gift certs to the place we buy supplies or our vet.
We get approached so often now, we have set up guidelines that say you can't just dump an ig on our door and say goodbye. We now require that you supply a suitable enclosure or contribute to obtaining one. Jimmie came with an enclosure but it needed a lot of work and we had to install all the UV and provide all the bulbs, etc. To the owners credit though they did give me some $ for driving down to pick her up (they were supposed to bring her to me).
I'm not going to front and say it's a piece of cake, because it isn't. However, we have a strong conviction that as long as we have the space and the means we'll do what we can. There are days I am burnt out and need a break and if Mr D isn't home I have to get up and do it anyway. We can't go away on vacation because we have no one to watch the igs and going over night is difficult because we need to have someone to come check on them and it's not always easy to match schedules.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining and I love them all but it is by no means easy to take in mulitple iguanas.
