In Reply to: A question for those who take in Iguanas. Regarding housing posted by Lindsay on March 22, 2001 at 15:52:01:

We require that any iguana we take in must come with whatever cage and equipment the owner has. If they refuse to part with any of it, they either have to pay a $150 cage fee or we refuse to take the iguana. Period. We have yet to have anyone not give up their cage and equipement. Frankly, most cages we get in with the iguanas are worthless. HOWEVER, by taking the cage, it hopefully prevents the previous owner from having an empty cage/tank sitting around the house and having the need to "fill it" (i.e. purchase yet another reptile that someone else will end up with). We also require that the person surrendering the iguana pay a "surrender fee". This helps defray the cost of the first vet visit, but in no way covers it all. We do not charge an adoption fee when we place one.

We currently have 2 full size adults (male and female) housed together. They have always been together. Other than that, the other 4 iguanas we have are housed separately. What was once our guest room is the "iguana room". We have four large cages in there and just enough room to walk between them. They have their own color TV for their viewing pleasure and bird feeders hanging outside the window. A humidifer runs 24/7.

Our fiesty male, Harry is housed in the kitchen where we once had a dinning room table. His cage takes up the whole wall.

I think we average between $300 - $400 per cage when we have had to build them ourselves. There are no ready made cages to house adult iguanas that we have found.

Having an iguana rescue/adoption "agency" is very very time consuming, expensive, but we feel is worth it. You learned to say "we're full" and know your limitations. Otherwise, you are doing a diservice to the animals.

Did I cover everything you asked? LOL
