Let us share some tricks with you...............................We just lost our 11 year old 10 lb female that looked a lot like this photo.. Sick on Thursday with red rimmed eyes and died on Tuesday with
Kidney and liver failure... a real shock to our vet ... who was previously with a zzoo .We think she ate " New Dirt" with plant food in it which we didn't notice the plant food until after she died...we think she may have been sneaking the new brand of cat food as well..nothing was definitive...anyway....any info on possible causes or similar...it makes you realize how little the vets do know, we were very careful about her diet. Ironically we had been looking at the ads for Rhino iguanas when looking for info on iguanas... Everyone said MIKE WAS JUST LIKE A GOLDEN RETRIEVER yet when people you don't know well are told your pet has died they laugh when you tell them it was a ten pound iguana....aren't
they reptilian!!
Here's our tribute to MIKE: We train our iguanas with our feet gentle herding them to go where we want them by blocking their way, and then they got so good at this and sometimes waalked too slowly so we found that we could her them faster
by lifting their tale up to make them know they we
wanted them to go. We could take our girls out to
sunbathe and we wouldn't have to worry about them running off...they would get wary around children but
for us we could go over and pick them up without hesitation. They never run from us. Allso if the do start to go forward you can always put your hand over their nose and stop them. Eventually Mike even kneew the word"NO", because she wasn't allowed to climb trees, although she met the firemen in the trees three times aand they scared her with all that equipment on and reeking of smoke...talk about a heart attack ! You don't actually think she was gonnna let go for those guys do you???
We found that with one iguana adding another doesn't always cure the melancholy they seem to get without outside stimulus...but turtles do.
Mike had two turtle pets over the years..and she seemed to love them..when she was ill she wanted to be over where Baby was or have us hold her. She
was so surprised she was ill. And then there is the tv...Mike couldn't stand to stay inside without the tv on. We figured this out when we had her in another room and we could see her peaking
around the corner to see the tv, she would have to hang over the edge of her perch and onto the side of the cage with one leg to see the tv.
One last thing... Mike was trained to go to the restroom in the shower. We initially started her out in the shower to bathe her and get some exercise..we worried about the temp of the bath and found that we like the shower the best....I can't
actually remeber an accident in the house except in the kitchen if we weren't paying attention to her. She would go down the hall to the shower and we would know that this is what she wanted.
Of course we suggest you keep it clean but ,for a very big iguana it is a great way to keep a big mess small.
Her favorite thing was to go for car rides. She preferred to hang onto the back seat of our jeep
so she could get a view of everything.
And they say iguanas can't talk...
