You shouldn't give up on him... you just need to earn his trust. And its no esy task with a big boy like that!
I suggest a pair of welding gloves or falconry gloves and a Thick comforter and an IG-proof room. When you conjure up soem courage, let him out of his cage and let him roam around the room, Approach him, if he goes on the attack, throw the comforter over him. DO NOT give up, or he'll know that being aggressive means that he wins. Wander around his enclosure for a while... if he starts to accept you with that.. then go a step further. Do not hover around the cage like he's on display though... just go about your buisness.
Why did the people give him up?

anyway... enough rambling... just keep trying, eventually he'll accept you.
